50-mile Trek for Filtermist Team ‘Longmynd Legs Miserables’

Nine intrepid Filtermist colleagues will be taking on the arduous ‘Longmynd Hike’ in October to raise funds for Asthma + Lung UK

The challenge involves trekking 50 miles in 24 hours over the rugged countryside of South Shropshire and the Welsh Marches, and includes climbing around 8,000 feet in total over eight summits.

Filtermist regularly supports individuals and causes connected to its employees and also organises team fund-raising activities; this year employees from Sales, Marketing, HR and Finance have all signed up to get their walking boots on in the name of charity.

Team ‘Longmynd Legs Miserables’ chose Asthma + Lung as the charity it will be supporting as it aligns with everything Filtermist does, as Commercial Director Jo Morris explains, “Filtermist and its parent company Absolent Air Care Group believe that no-one should be harmed by air pollution at work.

“All of our products and services are designed to protect people in production environments from exposure to airborne pollutants. Dust, fume, oil mist and smoke can cause a range of lung diseases such as occupational asthma and lung cancer which are all preventable if employers use effective control measures such as LEV – local exhaust ventilation.

“LEV systems clean the air at source, ensuring it is safe to breathe and won’t cause health problems. LEV also offers a number of other benefits including lower cleaning bills, higher employee retention, and less production downtime to name just a few.”

The team, which is aiming to raise £5000, will be training for the next two months in preparation for the October challenge.

HR Team Lead, Ian Reece, lives locally to Longmynd and suggested this challenge. Ian comments, “I know lots of people who have completed this hike and it’s not easy by any stretch of the imagination. There is no set route – just mandatory checkpoints along the way and no GPS is allowed, just OS maps.

“Our team includes different skill sets and fitness levels, so we’ll all support each other during the course of the 24 hours. Jo Morris jokingly said she’d push out Marketing Director, Lydia Barber, around the course in a wheelbarrow if she had to, hence the promotional shot!”
