Summer work placements provide valuable experience for local students

Oil mist filter manufacturer, Filtermist, was delighted to welcome three local teenagers to its Telford HQ this summer to experience life working at a UK manufacturing company that ships product to over 60 countries worldwide.

Harry Harper experienced a range of roles including assembly, testing and order processing, whilst Brandon Dixon is spending his whole summer learning the ropes in the manufacturing department. Brandon hopes to follow in the footsteps of his Dad Mark Dixon – one of Filtermist’s highly skilled metalspinners.

Alex Brown initially started out on the shop floor and then moved to the quality department where he was tasked with testing F Monitors

All three youngsters have parents who work at Filtermist. Harry’s father is Business Development Manager Chris Harper, whilst Alex’s Mum Karen is part of our Export team.

Managing Director, James Stansfield, comments, “Filtermist prides itself on its dedicated team, many of whom have worked here for a significant length of time. We are keen to support employees wherever possible, and this ethos extends to their families.

“Work experience is an excellent way of showing young people the opportunities on offer, and if they decide they’d like a job at Filtermist when they finish education that’s even better!”

Filtermist benefits from a highly skilled team of engineers – many of whom learnt their trade on apprenticeships and who have since passed their knowledge on to the next generation through on the job training.

James continues, “Filtermist recognises that young people are the future of manufacturing and engineering. We believe that it is the industry’s responsibility to offer whatever opportunities we can to enable youngsters to get a real taste of manufacturing in the twenty-first century.

“Historically, manufacturing has suffered from a bit of a negative reputation, but the industry has changed enormously in recent years. Anything that we can do to encourage youngsters to think about a career in manufacturing can only be a good thing.”

As further demonstration of the company’s commitment to engaging with the next generation, Filtermist is a proud supporter of Made Here Now – an initiative which aims to encourage more young people to consider careers in industry.
