TR19® compliant duct cleaning now available from Filtermist

Filtermist Systems now offers TR19 ® compliant duct cleaning as part of its portfolio of aftermarket services which aim to make life easier for employers that use Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems to control exposure to airborne contaminants.

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002 require all employers to effectively control risks posed by airborne particulate including oil mist, dust, fume, oil smoke and VOCs. Using LEV is generally regarded as the most effective way of minimising exposure to contaminated air – this includes single stand-alone filters as well as large central systems that pick up from multiple extraction points.

As an integral part of large extraction systems and industrial ventilation systems, the ductwork is also subject to COSHH requirements (9.1) which state ‘Every employer who provides any control measure to meet the requirements of regulation 7 shall ensure that, where relevant, it is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order, in good repair and in a clean condition.’

If ducting is not properly maintained and cleaned, deposits of oil, swarf, dust and other contaminants can build up - resulting in restricted airflow which can cause pressure loss in the system. Dirt and debris residues can also pose a significant fire risk and become a breeding ground for potentially hazardous bacteria including legionella.

BESA (Building Engineering Services Association) published its TR19® Guide to Good Practice - Internal Cleanliness of Ventilation Systems in 2005 (based on TR17 which was introduced in 1988 and DW/TM2 guidelines). TR19® is now widely accepted as the standard all duct cleaning services should meet; the new service from Filtermist is carried out in accordance with TR19® guidance.

The location and nature of ductwork means cleaning it is a specialist job which can often involve the operative working in confined spaces. This brings its own challenges as all operatives need to ensure they are compliant with The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 which includes undertaking risk assessments to identify any potential risks and implementing safe ways of working.

Jo Morris, Director of Filtermist’s Aftermarket Division, comments, “We are constantly looking at how we can improve and develop the services we offer so customers can focus on their day jobs without constantly having to think about their extraction systems. Offering ductwork cleaning is a great fit with Servicing and Maintenance, and LEV Testing, so it made total sense to bring this on-board.

“If a customer receives a Service or LEV Test report that advises their ducting needs cleaning, we are able to fulfil this for them - meaning they don’t need to spend valuable time sourcing a reputable supplier.”

Filtermist’s duct cleaning service is currently available for customers based in England, Wales and Scotland. Contact our team to find out more by calling 01952 290500 or emailing sales@filtermist.com.
