New qualification for Filtermist LEV Engineer

One of oil mist filters expert Filtermist’s LEV engineers is ending the year on a high after gaining a new qualification.

Matthew Wall was awarded his P604 certificate from the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS), which means he is now fully qualified in performance evaluation, commissioning and management of Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems.

Having joined the company in its consumables department in 2007, Matt progressed to the role of Sales Engineer for LEV and Service following the successful completion of his P601 (Thorough Examination and Testing of Systems), P602 (Basic Design Principles of LEV Systems) and P603 (Control of Hazardous Substances - Personal Protective Equipments) qualifications.

He now oversees all LEV test jobs to ensure they meet the exacting standards required by HSE. CoSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations require all LEV systems to be tested by a competent person at least once every 14 months. Whilst the regulations do not specify what constitutes ‘competent’, having BOHS certification is evidence of the successful completion of a course designed specifically to ensure LEV best practice.

Matt commissioned a new A Smoke 20 extraction unit from Filtermist’s sister company Absolent AB which was installed on two multi-spindle lathes at APB Engineering in Sandhurst as part of his coursework.

He was supported by Bill Cassells of Oxyl8, a former HSE senior inspector and chartered engineer with more than three decades of experience who supports all Filtermist staff undertaking BOHS qualifications.

Matt said: “It’s important for me not only to have the experience of working with LEV systems every day within my job, but to also have the expert knowledge I have gained as part of getting my qualifications.

“I’m hugely thankful to Filtermist and to OXYL8 for supporting me to pass my P604 and I look forward to putting my new-found knowledge into practice in 2019!”

Director of Group UK Sales, Ian Woodward, added: “Having the opportunity to access training and qualifications is hugely valuable to our members of staff – not only for their own personal development, but also to ensure that as an organisation, we have up to date knowledge and expert insights. It’s one of the reasons we are so well regarded within the industry, because of our commitment to training staff to the highest levels.

"A huge congratulations to Matt for putting in a considerable amount of time and effort and successfully achieving his P604 certificate!”
