Service and maintenance minimises downtime for Moog

Filtermist oil mist collectors are used by some of the World’s leading manufacturers operating in the Aerospace sector, including the high-profile Moog Aircraft Group.

Moog installed a number of Filtermist units at its new flagship production facility on the i54 business park located on the Wolverhampton / Staffordshire border which opened in 2012. This included re-installing and commissioning some of the existing units that were already in use at its previous Wobaston Road site, as well as new Filtermists procured for their quality and price.

Filtermist has proved so successful that there are now currently 81 units in daily operation across the 205,000sq ft factory, used to remove oil mist at source generated by a range of manufacturing applications including grinding, turning and finishing.

Filtermist Managing Director, James Stansfield, comments, “The installations at i54 are the latest chapter in Filtermist’s long history with Moog and its predecessors – we previously supplied units to GE Aviation Systems’ Wolverhampton operation which was acquired by Moog in 2009, and prior to that we worked with Smiths Aerospace before its acquisition by GE in 2007.”

As an excellent example of a modern advanced manufacturer, Moog recognises the importance of protecting the health of its workers and ensuring the state of the art i54 factory offers a safe working environment.

Effective oil mist removal plays an important role in both of these aspects and also ensures adherence to COSHH regulations; clean workplace air means workers aren’t breathing in harmful toxins, and significantly reduces hazards including fires, electrical faults and those associated with slippery surfaces.

Moog has also taken advantage of the fact that Filtermist UK offers service and maintenance agreements to ensure all of its units continue to function as effectively as possible at all times.

Paul Kinsgscott, Facilities and Maintenance Manager at Moog’s i54 site, elaborates, “We produce over 1000 components a day in our new factory so it’s vital we take every precaution available to minimise downtime.

“Scheduled servicing offers us the peace of mind that the units are doing their job properly and our workers are operating in a safe environment.”

Like any other filtration unit, Filtermist oil mist collectors need regular maintenance to ensure maximum operational efficiency and in addition, COSHH regulations require ‘thorough maintenance, examination and test of exposure control measures at intervals so that controls remain effective at all times.’

As a nationally renowned Company, Filtermist operates service divisions around the UK, ensuring any issues are resolved as quickly as possible. As well as looking after Filtermist units, the Company’s highly trained engineers also offer a range of additional services including LEV Testing on all makes and models, not just Filtermist, as well as Air Monitoring. Comprehensive, easy to read service and air test reports are provided as part of the service.

Filtermist’s Director of Sales, Stuart Plimmer, says, “Filtermist’s servicing is highly valued by our clients – particularly those operating high-volume production facilities. Our engineers visit Moog regularly to carry out routine maintenance – the fact that they’re often on site also means any issues that crop up can be dealt with immediately.”
