Absolent installation completes modernisation programme

Precision repetition engineering specialist, Wealdpark, has installed an oil smoke extraction system from Absolent as part of a comprehensive modernisation programme at its St Helens manufacturing facility.

Wealdpark has over 40 years’ experience in manufacturing volume repetition turned parts used in a wide range of sectors including aviation, automotive, electrical, fastener, firefighting, military and thermocouple industries.

The company has invested significantly in the latest technology following a decision in 2001 to modernise the production facilities. It now benefits from 12 Star sliding head machines, all running on neat oil and some at high pressure, as well as two Miyano and one Doosan fixed head lathes and a bespoke component cleaning system from MecWash and Firbimatic.

Wealdpark needed a robust air cleaning system capable of handling output from all 12 Star machines. The company had previously worked with Filtermist, so approached it again to identify the best solution for its current configuration.

Swedish Absolent AB is the parent company of oil mist extraction manufacturer, Filtermist - the sole distributor for Absolent in the UK. This arrangement enables Filtermist to supply extraction and filtration equipment for a huge range of industrial metalworking applications.

Filtermist’s Divisional Sales Manager, Chris Evans, says, “After an initial site visit to identify the company’s requirements, we supplied an A.smoke20 oil smoke filter with the capacity to handle the filtration requirements of several machines at once. The A.smoke20 is connected to five Star machines, drawing all oil smoke through a series of advanced synthetic and HEPA filter cassettes and returning ultra-clean air to the factory.
“Four Absolent oil mist filters were fitted to the remaining Star machines and two Filtermist units, located on the Hurco TM6 lathe and Hurco VM1 machining centre, complete Wealdpark’s comprehensive air filtration system.”

Absolent's A•smoke filters have been designed to guarantee more than 99.9% separation of particles down to 0.3µm. The separating efficiency remains constant and does not deteriorate over time. Its A•mist oil mist filters also guarantee a high separating efficiency, which does not deteriorate even over long periods of operation. The filters can run continuously, 24 hours a day, making them ideal for high usage applications.

Filtermist and Absolent have almost 60 years combined experience in oil mist, oil smoke mist, dust and fume extraction - both companies have established reputations for providing air filtration services to leading UK and global metalworking organisations. UK Health and Safety COSHH legislation (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health), puts the onus on employers to ensure their employees aren’t subjected to harmful toxins in the workplace. More and more manufacturers around the world are realising the need to provide a safe working environment to protect both their workers and the productivity of their business.

Wealdpark Director, Phil Smith, comments, “We have 19 full-time staff and as a responsible employer it’s imperative that we provide a clean working environment – not only to comply with health and safety legislation, but also to look after the health of our workforce.

“Continuous upgrading of our facilities over the past 12 years meant we needed a system capable of dealing with a number of extraction requirements. Having worked with Filtermist on previous occasions, we were confident it offered products that would meet our requirements and we’re extremely pleased with the results.”
